How to delete your TikTok account

Deleting a TikTok account takes about a minute of tapping and then thirty days of doing nothing. The tapping is the easy part. What catches people out is the order: there are three things that become impossible the moment the account is gone, and one of them — a copy of your own videos — is the thing most people want back.

The short version

Profile → menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Account → Deactivate or delete account → Delete account permanently. Verify who you are, pick a reason, confirm. The account disappears immediately and is erased 30 days later.

Label wording shifts a little between app versions — you may seeManage account where this says Account — but the path has been stable for a long time and the final screen always offers deactivate and delete as two separate choices.

Do these three things first

None of them can be done afterwards. This is the whole reason to read past the steps.

1. Request your data. In Settings and privacy → Account → Download your data, ask for a copy. TikTok assembles the file in the background and it can take a while to appear, so start it now rather than on the day you delete. It contains your profile information, your activity, your messages and a list of your posts.
2. Save the videos themselves. The data export is a record, not a media library, and the quality of what it does include is not what you uploaded. 3. Cancel anything that bills you. This is the one that costs money if you skip it. Deleting the account in the app

1. Open TikTok and make sure you are signed in to the account you mean to delete. If you use more than one, check the handle on your profile before going any further.
2. Tap Profile in the bottom-right corner.
3. Tap the menu — three horizontal lines, top right — then Settings and privacy.
4. Open Account.
5. Tap Deactivate or delete account, at the bottom of that screen.
6. Choose Delete account permanently. TikTok asks why you are leaving; the answer does not change anything, and you can pick whichever is closest.
7. Verify that the account is yours. What you are asked for depends on how you signed up: a password, a code sent to your phone or email, or a prompt from Google, Apple or Facebook if you used one of those to register.
8. Read the confirmation screen and confirm. The account is hidden from that moment.

Deleting from a browser

The website carries the same option, which is useful if you have lost the phone the account was set up on. Sign in at tiktok.com, open the profile menu at the top right, choose Settings, then Account, thenDeactivate or delete account. From there it matches the app.

Some regional builds surface fewer account controls on the web than in the app. If the option is missing entirely, use a phone — it is not a permissions problem you can argue with.

The 30 days, and the mistake almost everyone makes

Deletion is scheduled rather than instant. TikTok deactivates the account straight away — your profile stops resolving, your videos stop appearing — and then waits 30 days before erasing anything. Sign in at any point in that window and the deletion is cancelled and the account comes back whole.

That grace period is genuinely useful and it is also the single most common way a deletion quietly fails. You do not have to decide to come back; you only have to sign in. A tablet still logged in, a second phone, a "continue with TikTok" button on some other app, or simply tapping the icon out of habit is enough to reset the clock, and TikTok does not make a fuss about it.

So after you confirm:

• Sign out on every device you own, not just the one you deleted from.
• Delete the app from all of them.
• Remove any "log in with TikTok" connection on other services.
• Do not test whether it worked by trying to log in. That is the one action that undoes it.

What is actually gone after 30 days

• Your videos, drafts and photo posts. Including any that were only ever private.
• Your followers and following list. Neither is recoverable, and a new account starts at zero.
• Direct messages, from your side. What you sent may persist in the other person's inbox.
• Likes, favourites, comments and watch history.
• Purchase history and any Coins balance.

Two things do not vanish. Videos other people saved or reposted are on their devices and accounts, and nothing about deleting yours reaches those. And a sound you uploaded may survive on posts that used it, because those belong to their creators.

Deactivate instead, if you are unsure

Deactivation sits on the same screen and is the better choice more often than people expect. It hides your profile, your videos and your likes without destroying anything, and you reverse it by signing in. There is no countdown and no deadline.

It is the right option if you want a break, if you are stepping away from an audience you might want later, or if you care about keeping your username — a deleted handle can be claimed by somebody else, and a deactivated one cannot.

When the option will not cooperate

You cannot find "Deactivate or delete account"

It is the last item under Account, below the login and switching controls, and it is easy to scroll past. If the whole section looks unfamiliar, update the app: old builds put account controls somewhere else and TikTok does not backport the layout.

You never set a password

Accounts created through Google, Apple, Facebook or a phone number often have no password at all. Verification uses whichever of those you signed up with. If you have lost access to that too, recover the login before anything else — TikTok will not delete an account it cannot confirm belongs to you, and that is the correct behaviour even when it is inconvenient.

The account is suspended or banned

A suspended account can usually still be deleted once you can sign in. If you cannot sign in at all, the deletion flow is unreachable and appealing the suspension is the only route to it.

It is a child's account

A parent or guardian can ask TikTok to remove an account belonging to a child below the platform's minimum age through its support forms, without needing the login. That is a different process from the one above and TikTok handles it manually.
